Santa Cycle Ride

South Bristol Link (SBL) Road ‘Santa’ Celebration of Cycling

As far as we can account for 921 Santas cycled the length of the South Bristol Link Road on Sunday, 18th December 2016 onto Festival Way and were then hosted by Griffiths and West of England Partners at the stately Ashton Court. As far as we can research, this beats a previous highest number of 300 cycling Santas in Rome in 2013.

At 11am the assembled Santa’s rode from the Reserve Corridor at Bishopsworth, Bristol and along mostly sterile roads not yet open to traffic. Several junctions had to be safely negotiated and this was achieved with the professionalism of Forest Traffic Management who escorted all Santa’s in convoy along the route and guided by graduate engineer Will Morgan dressed as Rudolf the red nosed reindeer. Extra Marshals made up of local residents from the established resident group the Highridge Forum, Resec Security guards and local partnership volunteers ensured a trouble free and safe journey.

Bristol City Council Photographic Department in conjunction with Sky Aspect Aerial Photography who provided a drone have created a short video of the event.

The Santas were treated to a mince pies and refreshments on arrival and there followed a team photo on the south lawn with the dramatic background of the mansion house. Synergy a male voice close harmony choir from Abergavenny entertained the Santas in the music room of the mansion house with seasonal carols. A Griffiths Tipper Truck was on hand with Griffiths driver Kevin Dando to show cyclists the blackspots from a driver’s perspective. Children watched Santa feed the deer.

Local homelessness charity Caring in Bristol  were invited to collect on the day and made £300.

It was a fabulous family day out and all attendees very appreciative and complimentary of the event created by hard work from Griffiths and West of England Partners including Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council and Travelwest. Griffiths are grateful to Marshals and our insurers Arthur J. Gallagher Insurance Brokers for sponsorship towards the cost of running the event.

There is more information of the day on the Better by Bike website.
